Move over Thin Mints, your cousin visiting for the holidays is way hotter than you, and with her pink and brown colors of the season, a much snazzier dresser as well.

Fans of Trader Joe Joe's cookies already know that this stand-in for an Oreo has the unique ability to be both better tasting and less expensive than its Nabisco inspiration. The filling is lighter and fluffier, and in the case of the creamy vanilla flavor, has obvious flecks of vanilla in the filling.

Candy Cane Joe Joe's are a seasonal offering -- same great, dark cocoa wafers as the existing Chocolate Joe Joe's, but filled with a very bracing peppermint vanilla filling, which has crushed candy canes throughout.

The crushed canes are finely crushed enough not to shred your gumline, but gritty enough to still stand up and be noticed.

This is one "minty" taste combo; very strongly mint flavored, but very much candy cane at the same time. This means it doesn't taste or remind me of toothpaste -- my litmus taste for all mint flavored foods. It is strong enough you won't likely eat an entire handful or a box (a good thing), but not so strong it will create a hip rumor, like Altoids.

Set two out for Santa with a cup of Hot Cocoa, or give them to carolers this season.

I’m a meatatarian by nature and nurture, and sausage is by far one of my favorites. These veggie patties come extremely close to matching the real thing. If meat grew on a tree this is how it would taste.

2. Thai Joe’s Coconut Curry Chicken Stix (8 points)
The stix are good enough to rival spring rolls at many Thai restaurants. For being a one-trick pony, Thai Joe did pretty well for himself here.

Not a lot of Parmesan, but good pastry, and thankfully, no pups involved. A good twist on the classic pig in a blanket, especially since the mini-dogs are beef.

Top 5 Biggest Winner Versus Expectation
1. Baker Josef’s Chocolate Cake and Frosting Mixes (10 points)
Nathan and Sonia’s biggest pleasant surprise was the Baker Josef's Chocolate Cake and Frosting Mixes. Neither one of them is really a "chocolate cake person," but they might be if all chocolate cakes tasted like this one.

2. Green Plant Green Food Beverage (6 points)
Okay, it’s not highly rated, but it was definitely one of the biggest pleasant surprises for me. It looked disgusting and I had to swallow hard before trying it, but the green beverage actually turned out to be fairly good overall. I definitely thought I’d score it much lower.

3. Heart of Darkness Mango Passion Fruit Blend (8 points)
After the very unsuccessful Organic Mango Nectar, we were a little hesitant to try this one, but it's really tasty. A bit oddly inspired, to be sure.

Bananas! Natures pre-packaged food to-go! They are hard to miss with their mellow yellow skin. The banana confidently provides loads of potassium, vitamin B-6, magnesium and makes a great snack any time of day. Peel a 'nana and place it in the freezer for an hour then layer it with some greek yogurt and you will have yourself a delicious, healthy treat packed with protein and great texture! At only $.19 you can't go wrong!

Gluten. Glue-ton. That's one way to remember it. Gluten is basically the starchy part of the bread that gives it it's unforgettable texture; the glue that binds all the tons of bread crumbs together in an elastic fashion. And maybe it even contributes to the heavenly fresh baked bread smell? Unfortunately, gluten is the arch-enemy food allergy to millions of eaters around the world. It can cause unsightly acne, unbreathable gas, and an ever-powerful ability to whip an allergic eater into a food coma. Sound like something you can relate to? 1. 2007 Picket Fence Pinot Noir ($10) – With Thankgiving days away and the knowledge that this one is (or was) available from coast to coast it was a natural fit for my top choice. A very nice example of what much more expensive Pinot’s deliver. This one usually retails for $30. If you can’t find this one grab the Sebastopol Hills (my take on the ‘08) instead.

2. 2008 Steelhead Sauvignon Blanc ($6) – A very nice California styled Sauvignon Blanc this one would again make a fine fit on your holiday tables. Plush, full and balanced with cantaloupe and citrus on top of a firm mineral backbone which keeps the palate crisp and refreshing. If you can’t find this try the Overlake Sauvignon Blanc.

3. 2007 Roustabout Meritage ($6) – Did I really find my replacement to the Franc Merlot? Just about. This starts interesting with brown sugar, blackberry fruit and spice on the nose and is smooth and juicy on the palate with tangy tannins. I’m so close to loving this one… Just a bit more acidity and I’m buying by the case. Still buying more as this one is plenty enjoyable…

4. 2008 Trader Joe’s Pinot Noir Reserve Carneros ($10) – Yet to review this one but we have another winner here. Lighter bodied (and possibly more elegant) than the Picket Fence this one is smooth and juicy with nice fruit and acidity on a dry, orange rind finish. Trader Joe’s is swimming in great Pinot offerings for less than $10. Another alternative is the Caretaker Pinot Noir.

5. 2008 Now & Zen Alsace White ($5) – This one is a nice follow up to the ’07 . If I am not pairing this one with my spicy Thai or Indian meals you can almost be certain the Dr. Beckermann Riesling is taking its place…

6. 2009 King Shag Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc ($7) – Another lacking a review (my thoughts on the’07) but it wasn’t lacking from my summer rotation as this o was once again a go to offering. Being much grassier, this is for those that are a fan of the Kiwi style (like me!). If you prefer to stay domestic the Geyser Peak is quite refreshing as well.

7. 2009 Overlake Chardonnay ($6) – Most of you know that I am not a huge of this varietal. Given that this seems to deliver the majority of things people love about California Chardonnay at a fraction of the cost. I’ve already served this one at numerous parties and received nothing but compliments. Feel free to do the same…

8. 2009 Emergence White ($7) – If you are interested in learning about new grapes you can experience Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne in this bottling. Full bodied and viscous on the palate with peaches and cantaloupe flavors before a mineral acidity kicks into balance this one out. For those looking for something off the beaten path try this with one of your holiday meals.

9. I’m going to do a little cheating here and give a nod to a few of my long time favorites; the Perrin Reserve ($7) and J. Vidal-Fleury ($7) from the Cotes du Rhone and the Casillero del Diablo Carmenere($8). Classics as I call them. I’ve enjoyed these vintage after vintage and always look forward to my next bottle.

10. And I’ll finish with a bit more cheating to highlight some favorite value plays; Epicuro Aglianico ($5),Archeo Nero d’ Avola ($4) and the 2008 La Granja Tempranillo ($4). I haven’t tried any of these of late but have my fingers crossed that these are still delivering a lot of bang for the buck…

It may not be the fanciest wine in the market, but it definitely does the job in helping you relax after a long week. Or having a dinner party? Pacific Almond Milk

Holy ~~cow~~ almond! This stuff is the nectar of the gods! If crack kills, then almond milk brings back life. Almond milk is so good, that even it defies the infamous rule of "the first bite is better than the last". Almond milk gets BETTER each and every sip. If offered a scoop of ice cream or a glass of vanilla almond milk, I would be confident in saying bring me the almond with a straw please. If you haven't tried it, give it a ~~shot~~ glass. It seems to have a special flare--right? At any rate, although it's not summertime, your taste buds will still appreciate this treat. Taste buds seems to smile over Otter Pops year round, so let's make it just as tasty, but much healthier! Frozen mango chunks are natures bagged bit size popsicles. Great after dinner treat! Toss a few in with some FAGE Greek Yogurt and you really have yourself something special. And with only 90 calories in 26 chunks (WOW!) there really is no excuse not to give it a shot...or a bite...26 bites...

Fage Greek Yogurt Fat-Free

Those Greeks always have to be different! Not only are they full of wacky stories with guys named Zeus who throw lightening bolts, but once again, they have outdone themselves, but this time instead of mythology, it's yogurt. Erase almost everything you currently know about yogurt, because Greek yogurt, is yogurt on steroids. It's uber thick, extremely creamy AND with only 120 calories and 20 grams of protein per cup, its starting to sound like another one of their wacky stories. Top it with a little honey and cinnamon and BAM, Zeus just hit your taste buds with one of his lightening bolts. YUM!

Call me skinny, but I think it was Fage Greek Yogurt that made Zeus the ruler of the sky.

Instant Miso Soup

If you've gone outside this past week in Southern California or turned on the news from another location, the storms in SoCal are pretty outrageous, at least for us Californians who are cold if it gets below 70 degrees. So what does the rain mean to us Californians? Well, it means you're staying in tonight and probably this weekend. See, us Californians, we are like cats. We do not like any uninvited water on us in any form, unless of course it is a nice dip in the pacific ocean after a rigorous tanning session. So here you are, staying in tonight...and this weekend. At this point you have studied and read Trader Joe's List Top 10 Wines in addition to overhearing the weather man utter "a wet weekend". That being said, you decide picking up the top 8 wines complemented by a few netflix deliveries sounds like a fun, dry weekend. Oh it is! But come Sunday morning, you realize drinking 3-4 bottles Saturday night leaves you with an aching headache and an overall hangover. Rather than taking a few IB profin please perform the following: 1) boil 2 cups of water. 2) Toss in that miso soup packet. 3) Drink. 4) smile, because within 20 minutes you are feeling 1000 times better. No joke, this soup is a quick fix and at only 90 calories a packet, you are feeling less guilty about that late night pizza order too.

Cioppino Seafood Stew

The only difficult part about this delicious stew is spelling the word C-i-o-p-p-i-n-o when you send your friends and family a text demanding they go and pick this up for dinner. Not only is it around $5, but it is a tomato based stew jam packed with a delicious variety of mussels, clams, white fish, and shrimp. And with a total calorie count of 340 calories and 44grams of protein, this is something that may even appeal to the manliest of men. Don't forget that while you chow down, a high protein count means your metabolism is going to speed while the antioxidant filled tomatoes boost up your immunity.

Trader Joe’s Wines – Top 10 Wine List

1. 2007 Trentatre Rosso($6) – A wine that has grown on me with every bottle. I am now smitten with this well balanced effort that offers a very nice finish to boot. Supplies are waning and I’ve been grabbing every bottle I can find…

2. 2007 Rabbit Ridge Allure de Robles ($5) – If my readers haven’t emptied stores of this one by now you may still have a chance to get some. The only reason this didn’t make the top spot is the high ABV%. That said, I just grabbed another case of this a few days back. Fantastic stuff!

3. 2008 Sauvignon Republic Stellenbosch Sauvignon Blanc ($7) – I’ve yet to try the Marlborough (91 points from the Wine Spectator) or the Russian River but already stocked up on all three. Pretty soon I intend to do a blind tasting of the lot. Can I pick out the differences in terroir? Stay tuned!

4. 2008 VINTJS Syrah ($7) – As I’ve previously mentioned this wine was made by Bob Lindquist of Qupe. Given how much I’ve enjoyed those wines I was tickled to find this one. I put a case in the cellar which I plan on checking in on in 3 years or so…

5. 2007 Now & Zen Wasabi White ($5) – Another one I’ve enjoyed more with each bottle, this is a perfect pairing for a spicy Thai or Indian dish. I’ve got a few more bottles waiting in the rack for this situtation.

6. 2007 Perrin Cotes du Rhone Reserve ($7) – Another I’ve been enjoying vintage after vintage. I’m a big fan of the GSM comnination. My latest post was the ‘05. The ‘07 shows nice fruit and pepper/herbal aromas. Still haven’t had better for the money!

7. 2008 Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo Carmenere ($8) – I’m sipping this one as I type and think it deserves an even higher rating. A wine I’ve often called “old dependable” as I have been enjoying this for more vintages than I can remember dating back to my pre-blogging days. The first recorded instance is the ‘05 vintage. The ‘08 shows smoky meat and herbal notes (eucalyptus?) that merge with a dried cherry finish. A nice structure throughout. Never hesitate to grab this one…

8. 2006 Chiusa Grande Tommolo Montepulciano d’ Abruzzo ($5) – A wine that has disappointed few and delivers vintage after vintage. Tart cherries on the nose that make it to the palate with a light tannic, tingly finish. A perfect match for spaghetti and meatballs.

9. 2008 La Granja Tempranillo ($4) – Another I have been drinking with regularity. Apparently this one is a take on “when pigs can fly”. Showing soft rounded fruit up front that leads to a dry, herbal mid-palate and a tongue smacking finish. I’ve already had nearly a case of this one and still have the racks loaded.

10. 2007 Dr. Beckermann Piesporter Michelsberg Riesling Spatlese ($5) – Yet another long time fave, I’ve been enjoying this one since the‘05 vintage. This one now as some competition on the scene with the Now & Zen but is providing a slightly sweeter alternative that is still appealing in this household.

Organic POLENTA

At first glance it looks like a yellow submarine. At second glance it looks like yellow torpedo. Never did it look like a yellow submarine shooting a yellow torpedo. But, that is not to say that your taste buds wont explode with yumminess once this yellow torpedo comes crashing into your taste buds! In an interview with taste bud #134B and taste bud #694C we gathered the following:

We all know what those are--items strategically placed by the checkout line, so as you wait, you stare, as you stare, you read, as you read, you crave, as you crave, you grab, as you grab, you buy, as you buy, you take home only to find yourself asking 'why did I buy this?!'

Well folks, that is news of the past. Let @traderjoeslist tell you something, impulse buys at Trader Joe's are not based in corporate greed, they are based in YOU smiling. Let's do the 6-step process described above using Dark (or Milk) Chocolate Crisps: step 1 of impulse you wait (the checker-outer is a cutie, huh?) /step 2 you stare...so far so good (no one minds staring at chocolate)/step 3 you read--read what? thin, curved waves of Belgian chocolate with crunchy bits, okay YUM/step 4 you grab (now there's no turning back)/step 5 item purchased (safely secured in your bag)/step 6 take home and immediately try this dark chocolate haven that resembles a potato chip with an identity crisis. As the leaves turn here in North Carolina, where we have the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains that make for an amazing display of autumn, I turn to the seasonal foods: apples, pumpkin, chai. Trader Joes carries a spiced Apple Cider that rings in the season perfectly. You can drink it cold or heat it up for a snuggly drink that goes splendidly with the first fire of the season. Halloween and Thanksgiving are upon us and nothing soothes and puts you in the spirit quite like a great hot cider.

Have you ever wondered what is meant by the expression "the cat's meow"? Well, lucky for you @traderjoeslist has the answer! The expression actually means 'EAT Trader Joes Chocolatey Cat Cookies'....and it also means 'something considered to be outstanding'. But clearly the two meanings are one-and-the-same...kinda like an egg--you can have it scrambled or sunny side up, but either way you're still having an egg. You can have a CCC or 'the cat's meow', but either way you're having something considered to be outstanding. Keep in mind when the ever infamous, controlling sweet tooth start's talking, these cookies are your carrier food away from tempting, guilt-full sweets like milks favorite cookie Ore(oh-no)! To tell you the truth, the latest gossip magazine revealed Milk is having an affair with Oreo's and it's no secret it's with Chocolatey Cat Cookies. Let's put it this way, it doesn't matter if you're drinking Soy, Rice, Hemp, Almond, or Moo-Cow Milk, the CCC's don't judge; they completment each variety of milk and promise to shut up that nagging sweet tooth. Go ahead and send your sweet tooth on a much needed vacation and enjoy some CCC because one serving of 15 CCC carries only 120 Calories (vs 2 oreos 100 calories!)? Not to shabby...cat.

Trader Joe's List TOP 10 WINES

TOP 10 WINES thanks to: Jason's Wine Blog

You've asked and asked...so here it is. Depending on when you read this you have 2 days to carefully select a wine before the weekend. Don't be afraid to grab a couple bottles, this Jason guy knows what he's talking about....

1. 2007 Castle Rock Mendocino County Pinot Noir ($10) – Worries were this one was on its way out but a fresh supply arrived. Delicate floral nose, soft strawberries on the palate and a silky finish. Get it while you can, at $10 this Pinot is worth every cent.
2. 2007 Chariot Gypsy ($5) – Those that are following along know I have been tracking the Gypsy from coast to coast. While stock in the west is limited or sold out this one seems to still be available across the rest of the country. A perfect fruit forward, juicy quaffer that pairs perfectly with burgers. I grabbed two cases
3. 2007 King Shag Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc($7) – The mercury is spiking and so is my consumption of Sauvignon Blanc. Lot’s of nice ones available at Trader Joe’s. This one strikes the perfect balance between grassy and citrus flavors and delivers a crisp, minerally finish. This one is my top Sauvignon Blanc pick, perfect for a warm summer evening on the patio.
4. 2007 Epicuro Aglianico ($5) – This bottle previously lived atop the Top 10 list and made a strong impression recently. The nose showed cherries while the palate and fruity leading to a lingering spicy finish. A nice light red for the summer. Don’t be afraid to try any of the other Epicuro offerings either. I’ve yet to post a review for this vintage but here is the review for the ‘05.
5. 2008 Honey Moon Viognier ($5) – There are times during the summer when you really want to drink a nice red but need something more refreshing. This is when I turn to Viognier. On the nose this one delivers fully pollinated flowers and red/orange fruit. On the peach and honey are prevalent on a full bodied frame of white stony, fruits with a hint of sweetness of the finish. Perfect with salmon.
6. 2005 Perrin Cotes du Rhone Reserve ($7) – With more cooking on the grill there has been more of this on the table. A typical Rhone GSM blend here (60/20/20) with a nose loaded of fruit and pepper. The palate brings cherry and blackberry before merging with spicy, barrel flavors on the finish. Could have just as easily picked the J. Vidal-Fleury or San Greal Red Supper Wine here as I drink them interchangably. Pick one next time your barbecuing chicken.
7. 2008 Geyser Peak Sauvignon Blanc ($8) – Another one that previously held the top spot, this one starts with citrus aromas. Light, crisp and tart in the mouth the finish is full of lemon and lime flavors interlaced on a crisp, acidic backbone. Another perfect summer wine, pair it with salad or on its own. I’ve yet to review this vintage but here is my post on the ‘06.
8. 2006 Chiusa Grande Tommolo Montepulciano d’ Abruzzo ($5) – Despite the reappearance of the Aglianico this one is still a regular in my house. Tart cherries on the nose that make it to the palate with a light tannic, tingly finish. Should be on your table whenever pasta is and then some.
9. 2008 Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo Carmenere ($8) – It’s summer and this is a bit heavy given the weather but sometimes I just need a bigger red.. Here you get smoky, leather tobacco notes on top of nice, rich fruit. Give it a try next time you are grilling fajitas or pork chops for that matter. Again yet to review the current vintage but here are my notes on the ‘06
10. 2006 The California Wine Party Franc Merlot ($5) – This one is still on the shelf but guessing its days are numbered. Fruit and a bit of green pepper on the nose. Soft tannins stay in the background and the chewy, cherry flavors linger on leading to a long dry finish. I’m looking forward to my next bottle.
Just Missed– these were those that were close to making the list but couldn’t squeeze into the Top 10… Bogle Petite Sirah($9), Callabriga Dao Red ($9), Archero Nero d’ Avola Ruggero di Tasso ($4), Chateau Ste. Michelle Columbia Valley Riesling ($6), VINTJS Sauvignon Blanc ($6), Kono Sauvignon Blanc ($8), Chateau des Cleons Muscadet ($6)
Special Selections– for those looking for bubbly or dessert…

Crunchy Curls- A Tasty Lentil & Potato Snack

CAUTION:

EXTREMELY CURLY, EXTREMELY DELICIOUS

Never judge a book by its cover. Never judge a snack by its bag. This completely under dressed bag somehow jumped out at me while in route to checkout. I'm not sure what caught my eye, the fact that it said CRUNCHY or LENTILS. Either way the curls on the bag made my mind start to curl around what a hybrid lentil potato snack would taste like. It's like Lentil had a one night stand with Potato and BAM--> a new love child named Crunchy Curls arrived. When Crunchy Curl grows up it's Facebook would headline with this picture, and flaunt about the fact that 31 of these 'better than french fries' snacks come out to only 130 calories (4g Fiber, 3g Protein). It's profile would be open to everyone and every network headlining pictures on your news feed showing off its crunchy, mildly salty, filling, and great after taste (like a french fry). Realistically, I know nothing can compete with a french fry, not even an Oreo, BUT, Myspace still competes with Facebook, and Mytouch still competes with iPhone. POINT: if its competing its worth eating.

Lite Kettle Corn

'Tis The Season!

Pop*POP*poP*Pop! It's not the sound of bubble wrap, but it is equally as exciting! TJ's just came out with LITE Kettle Corn. Personally, the name should be called Heaven Corn for 3 reasons: (1) sweet & salty & guilt-free, 110 calorie servings with 50% LESS fat than the original (2) the fact they are the what clouds would taste like if you could eat them: light and crunchy (3) the inventor clearly has omniscient powers. Okay, now that we've got that straightened out, lets discuss the logistics of this wonderfully delicious treat when you check out-- you MUST put this item on the very top of your bag for 2 reasons: (1) easy access for munching on the ride home (2) like eggs, they are best when not squashed. If you buy 1 bag, you will be upset. No one goes golfing with just one golf ball. You take at least 6, just in case someone borrows one, you loose one, you save one...etc. I've said all I can on this topic. Now please follow the light and go pick up some Heaven Corn.

Eggplant Parmesean

ATTENTION: MISSING--FROM YOUR BASKET!

Anything that ends in "Parmesan" is bound to either (A) taste delicious and/or (B) make you feel guilty. FORTUNATELY TJ's Eggplant Parmesean give's you (A) without the (B). No calorie counting here. The only counting you'll be doing is seven minutes and thirty seconds while you're eggplant paremean defrosts in the microwave (use oven if not a fan of microwaves). Like the sound of a new text message in ur inbox? Well, once the microwave BEEP BEEP (done done) massages your ears, expect to tune out even the most anticipated texts, as you are about to eat up a mouth full of guiltless goodies. Need I say more? DEFINITELY put this one in the basket. Don't forget to wave back at those micro-waves.

Lentils: Ready to Eat Warm or Cold

Warm or Cold. Sunshine or clouds. Summer or Fall. This petite, packaged item is delicious anyway, anytime, anywere. These cute little guys kiss your taste buds with a dash of salt and their dense-like texture. Once you have attended the savory explosion party hosted by the Savory Edamame

Crackers, head over to the taste bud kissing booth and mix a serving of these mildly salty lentil-balls with some steamed broccoli, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower. I promise you won’t leave disappointed or hungry. Did I mention they're ridiculously easy to prepare? I find myself fork in bag about 1/3 of the time. It's like buying wholesale--you get the bang for your buck, the quantity without sacrificing quality, filling without emptying your wallet or your calorie intake for the day.

Call me skinny, but anything that gets triple A's--Anyway,Anytime, Anywhere--get's me standing in line at the taste bud kissing booth. I expect the line to be long, but don't worry, i'll save you a spot.

Savory Edamame Crackers

Okey dokey--here's the story...I was in TJ's, wanted to buy some wasabi peas and I stumbled across this delightfully savory, green bag. I see the word 'cracker' and rather than being offended, I quickly flipped the bag over to read the nutrtion facts. It was SHOCKING! Only 120 calories in 38 crackers!! The crackers basically sold themselves. And let me tell you, I put one of these gluten free crackers in my mouth and the savory explosion party started (which by the way, you are invited to). I knew I was hooked-for-life--HFL. They are cruchy, cripsy, salty, and definitely dont crumble to pieces when you use them to scoop your favorite dip. I haven't gone into TJ's since my first experience without putting one of these humbling, green bags in my cart.

Better Than Peanut Butter

The title really speaks for its self. This stuff is to DIE for. Seriously, be careful--once you buy this, give yourself one taste and be prepared to step into a new addiction. I love this item so much, I limit myself on buying it. Once I open this tantelzing jar, I give myself 3 days before I find myself scraping the bottom. Go ahead, give this a try. I think the stats are something to be addicted to in itself :85% less fat and 40% less calories than regular peanut butter. I'm not trying to suggest giving you a new addiction, but I do think this needs to given at least a taste.

Okay, call me skinny, but I'm heading to Trader Joe's right now to buy a jar.

Egg White Salad

CAUTION--chance of sell out HIGH.

From what I can recall, every mouth i've seen try this skinny snack quickly replied with a "YUM!!" Nine out of ten times I step into Trader Joes, this yummy item, along with the Spicy Ranchero version, are almost completely sold out! It's creamy, but not thick; filling, but not heavy; delicious, but guilt free. With a high protein content (14g total!) along with low calories (100 total!) it's no wonder these tasty snacks/meals fly off the shelves faster than you can burn the 100 calories! Throw your 100 calorie snack bags away, as the convient container makes it easy to carry on the go.
